The Honshu War, 1950-53 (HW) is a two-player, low-to-intermediate complexity, strategic simulation of the war that could have resulted had Japan ended up divided between Communist and US occupation forces at the end of World War II. The Soviet player is mainly on the offensive, attempting to win the game by seizing key objectives within the territory of the Western-allied Republic of Japan. At the same time, though, the situation allows for and at times demands the launching of sharp counteroffensives by the United Nations player.
Each hexagon on the map represents 25 miles (40 kilometers) from side to opposite side. The units of maneuver for both sides are divisions. Each full turn represents from one to two months, depending on the season. By seasonally telescoping time in that way, the turn-by-turn movement and combat capacities of the units can be held as a constant.
